Ireland, Rosslare & Waterford, 14 June 2013

Cardiff to Fishguard Port ride was cold, wet and windy, this is a small port, no immigration or customs, just check in and ride to the gate and wait, again no need to get off my bike. Cold wind blowing with the odd shower. Cost $75 booked online and 3.5 hrs to Rosslare Port in Ireland, big boat shops, restaurants and bars and even a free movie, The Life of Pi.

Rode off the boat in rain, dripping by the time I got to the hotel in Rosslare. The sun came out for a while the next morning but cold 9.5c on the way to Waterford to check out the Waterford Crystal Factory, very interesting and then on to Dublin.

United Kingdom, Cardiff, 13 June 2013

The ride from Hastings to Cardiff was cold (13c), wet and windy, I took the back roads which made it a lot easier and I got to see some very small towns and villages. The freeway is nasty, the spray from trucks and other traffic makes it very difficult to see anything.

United Kingdom, Hastings, 5-12 June 2013

I rode from Veghel through Belgium to Calais in France and caught the ferry to Dover in the UK.

The ferry takes 1.5 hours and costs $40, book online and there is no need to print your ticket. Immigration asked me to take my helmet off asked a few questions and stamped my passport with a 6 month visa, next check-in to P&O Ferries and ride to the gate, the whole process is streamlined and very efficient and I did not even have to get off my bike. The ferry port is huge with car and truck ferries running day and night and there is the tunnel as well where you ride onto a train and ride off at the other end, it takes 35min and costs a bit more. From Dover I rode to Hastings where I spent a few days with a friend and visited a few others. I also visited a few bike shops, it is possible to buy a bike in the UK as long as I have a local address which could be a friend’s, all I have to do is arrange my own insurance.

The weather so far has been un-seasonally cold and wet much to the locals disappointment but I am getting used to it hahaha.

United Kingdom, British Beer

This gallery contains 22 photos.

I have never seen such a huge variety of micro brewery beers, ales and stouts, every pub seems to have its own concoction. Cheers

Netherlands, Veghel, 19 May – 4 June 2013

I arrived here with the intention of buying a motorcycle and using it to travel in Europe for a year or two but soon found out that only residents can own a motor vehicle in the Netherlands. After some discussion with the bike shop I finished up hiring a new BMW F700 GS with comprehensive insurance and breakdown cover for 4 months, June to September for 2,500 euro. They took a few days to find panniers, top box and a windscreen, there is a shortage at BMW, finally got going on the 5th of June. In the meantime I caught up with friends, sampled the local brews, ordered some bits and pieces and went on a few short rides to become familiar with the bike.

The guy to see about a bike is Wiecher Joosse at http://www.motoportveldhoven.nl/

Brunei, Bandar Seri Begawan, 16-22 February 2013

Small airport, Visa on Arrival BND20 ($16) for a 2 week visa, there is a money changer at the airport, most hotels offer a free airport pickup but you have to email them in advance, a taxi will cost you around $30, BND12 departure tax.

Not a lot to do in in this place, warm and very humid, no alcohol and all the other prohibitions that go with a Muslim state, you can walk around the city in 30 minutes or less.

There is the a big mosque, a park with some very steep trails, a museum and the water village where apparently half the population lives complete with schools, police stations etc all connected by walkways. You can get a one hour private boat tour of the water village for BND10.

The museum is small and well organised, entry is free, no photos and it is air-conditioned, taxi to the museum is BND10 or take the bus for BND1 from the city or a 5km walk.

Weekends are plastic bag free, every family receives BND1000 per month from the state, education and medical are free, petrol, water and power are subsidised according to the boat driver.

Philippines, Manila, 6-15 February 2013

There are 2 Airports you can use to get to Manila, one is Clark which is located in Angeles a 2.5 hour bus ride North of Manila, the other is located in Manila itself and is the preferred option as you avoid the long commute.

I arrived in Clark in the middle of the night and had to spend the night at a hotel in Angeles and catch the bus the next day to Manila, There are regular busses during the day from the Airport and cost PHP450 ($10).

The streets are crowded and it takes ages to get anywhere by taxis which are cheap, the Metro is faster but absolutely packed and pickpockets abound. I was pickpocketed twice, the first time I caught the kid and he ran off, the second time I didn’t even know it had happened and lost about $20 in small notes from my back pocket.

The people are friendly and everyone speaks English.

There is a PHP450 Departure tax.

Kuwait, 29 Nov – 3 Dec 2012

This has to be the most complicated Airport Visa on Arrival procedure I have been through. Do not stand in the queue for Immigration, instead go up the stairs on the left and change some money at the currency exchange into Kuwait Dinar, you will need 3 dinar, next go to Stamp machines and get 3 x 1 Dinar stamps then go to the first counter behind the machines and get  a ticket and a copy of your  passport, move to the next counter where the guy will enter some info on a computer and hand your passport down to the end counter, wait until your name is called, hand over the stamps, the guy will paste the stamps onto a visa form printed in Arabic with a few words of English, stamp the stamps and give the form back to you, this is your Visa. Now go back downstairs, do not join the queue just show your Visa form and passport and walk through the gate at the side, there will be a couple more checks and then you can go collect your luggage which will be waiting for you. Not knowing any of the above I wandered around in circles asking questions and getting answers in broken English trying to find out what I had to do next and it took ages, the place is packed with other confused travellers as well hahahaha, not funny at the time

Kuwait is still recovering from Saddam’s invasion in 1992, the invaders trashed and looted the place and nothing appears to have been done about it since then, all the tourist attractions are still closed. The only place open was a small private museum of the Invasion. Besides a few big new Shopping Malls where you can shop and go to a movie there is nothing to do but wander the streets.

Public Transport is practically non-existent, taxis are cheap and illegal taxis are even cheaper.

Bahrain, Manama, 23-29 November 2012

I arrived in Bahrain and everything was closed for the first 3 days, Muharram. So I wandered the streets some of which had crowds dressed in black, with people cutting themselves up and bleeding all over their white robes, I beat a hasty retreat, wasn’t game enough to take any pictures either.
Armoured cars and police at every corner, probably a result of the recent bombings, warnings to stay away from certain areas but many I met said “Welcome to Bahrain”.
Public transport is practically non-existent, metered taxis are the only way to get around and as they are not cheap illegal taxis are common, ask reception at your hotel to arrange one, cost for 4 hours is 15 dinar or $37, the fare from Manama to the Airport is 4 dinar or $10.
The Gulf States fascination with spending huge amounts of cash on reclaimed land is baffling as there is no shortage of land.

Qatar, Doha, 17-23 November 2012

Qatar, Doha, 17-23 November 2012

The time zone has gone backwards another hour so it gets dark at 1730 and once the sun goes down it gets cold. There is always a breeze blowing which keeps things pleasant during the day.
This place is having a makeover, it looks like they want to be the Cultural Centre of the Gulf countries. The Museum of Islamic Art is new and quite impressive, the 5th Annual Doha Film Festival is on right now with the focus being on Muslim films, no expense spared and the National Museum is being rebuilt which means it’s not open at the moment.
Lots of new construction and lots of older buildings not well maintained.
Big SUV’s abound and Public Transport is by bus similar to Abu Dhabi but here you need a Smartcard no cash. Traffic is denser, less disciplined, running red lights is the norm and horns sound.
This time last year, I was crossing from Mexico into Belize on my bike, another world altogether.
