I hired a car at Valencia airport and drove to Benicassim to visit my friend who spends a few months of the year there in his caravan. For the first time ever the Rental company did not give me the car because my International Driving Permit was more than one year old. Nobody and that includes the Police anywhere in the world has ever asked me to produce my IDP, they only want to see my regular Australian Driving Licence. The shuttle driver who was taking me back to the airport said that there were a few other Rental companies in the area and he would take me there to see if I could get a car which was very kind of him and I agreed. And I was able to rent a car with my old IDP no problem at all other than I had to pay a lot more because it was not booked and it was a last minute rental and I have not been able to get a refund as yet. An IDP is meant to be a translation for countries that do not use the Latin alphabet. Anyway take note that you may have this problem when renting a vehicle in Spain. This was also the end of Summer festival in Benicassim where they let the bulls run loose in the streets and then let the public play with the bulls in a makeshift arena with two ambulances on standby hahaha.
