Romania – Deva, 10 – 11 July 2025

Pecs to Deva, Romania – 469 kms in 5:27 hrs, a fairly long ride, 3 stops for fuel, two thirds of the ride was on freeways with some back roads thrown in between them. Many small villages made it slow going. Dark clouds but no rain just wet pavement on the freeway for a short while which is not so bad. Romania has a blanket road toll similar to Hungary but motorcycles do not have to pay the toll because they realise that motorcycles do not damage the roads. This is my third visit to Romania 2013, 2019 when I was returning from Ukraine and 2025 on my way to the Danube delta. Deva – small city, this was more a place to break journey and it has a Castle on a hill that looked interesting so here I am. The Castle has a Funicular which does not work so they have a little blue electric bus that takes people to within 700m of the castle and then you are on your own. I walked about 100m up a steep slope and decided that I need to be able to walk unassisted tomorrow and came back down hahaha. There are a few elaborately decorated Orthodox churches, more than one would expect in such a small place. .
